Ok, so your wanting to get your own website, yourname.com. Is it expensive? No. Is it hard? No. Is it confusing? Yes, but only because of the multitude of people out there trying to make big $$'s. Let me help you sort it out. I have setup and hosted many - many domains since 1995. Trust me I will get you going. Very 1st thing is... and this applies if you don't have a domain or already have one. Most people or companies are confused about how it works so contact a 3rd party and let them take care of it. DANGER WILL ROBINSON, DANGER. Now in fairness . there are a few honest people out there but not many when it comes to web hosting. You give them their money, you have a site up, everything is great. Right? No, you most likely don't own the domain. What I paid for it, it's mine! Wrong, wrong and wrong. That is how they keep you as a customer. Ok, let me explain the whole process 1st.
#1. You find a domain name that is not taken and register it. Domain names are getting harder to get what you actually want, so be creative. Whois is your friend. Go here and type in a name you want. Remember .com is the best. Find a Domain Name Now that link has a very nice whois, but I won't endorse them as where to register as very expensive. Even if you have plans in the future to get a domain / website register your domain name now. No more than $15 a year, keep it paid and you own it no other cost, for owning it. #2 Ok, you have your domain name, or website name, Cool. The next step, if your ready to have an actual website is to have it hosted. Yeah the registration just gives you the name nothing else. We now have to pay someone a monthly or yearly fee to host our website. Word of caution. Cheaper is not better here, but it also depends on the uptime you want. Your host should give you access to a control panel to manage your own e-mail accounts, FTP, etc. Add-ons such as demographic reports, built in scripts for different programs, etc. is nice. depends on your needs. If you don't have access to manage your own email accounts or FTP, run away. Look around this page and I have advertisements from reputable companies that can host for you. #3 Do I own my domain? Do a whois, click this link. Find a Domain Name The owner says it is you. Ok I own it, right? Who is the administrative contact? If not you, WRONG. Well yes you do own it but changing to a different host will be next to impossible. Here is an example. Freaking unbelievable but true. I have many more examples but this one will resonate and drive my point home the best. Brookville, Indiana Police Dept contacted me. Email wasn't working and they needed it for homeland security. Seems bulletins are sent via email. I do a whois and their web host company was admin contact. The company had gone out of business. I called the registrar (where they purchased the domain name) and was told to fax info on who really owns domain. Remember this was a police dept. The domain name was brookvillepd.com. The chief of police faxed on his letterhead, stating the company was out of business and needed to change DNS servers to get him back up. Along with that he scanned and faxed his Indiana Chief of Police for Brookville, IN ID. Guess what, Nada. Had to register a new domain and change e-mail with homeland security. Make sure you own your domain. Owner and admin contact. Big Big Huge hint. The admin email must not be tied to your domain. Use a free yahoo or Gmail email.
#4 So now it's time to actually put up a webpage. This will be the expensive part if you let it. Yeah who am I talk, as this site looks lame :) http://www.internetmyway.com http://www.pcnetdoc.com are 2 examples of my sites. http://www.turnkeydialup.com is a 3rd. If you want to do this on the cheap. Here is a big reason why. You need to update content, constantly. Do you do it in house or pay someone big bucks for what you could do yourself? Templates, templates, templates. Get yourself Microsoft front page. Do searches for frontpage templates. The better ones you need to pay for, but what is $50 or so compared to the $1,000 or more cost of having it done? There will be filler text just replace it with what you want. Replace images with what you want. Start with free ones, to get the hang of it.
SUMMARY Register your own domain name. No more than $15 a year. This insures you own it. Before you register get yourself a free Yahoo or Gmail email account and use it. Just make sure you check it at least once every 2 weeks to keep it active. Look for a host company that is reliable, gives you access to administer your own email and ftp. Check my links on this page for help. Strongly consider Microsoft front page and templates to get your site up. In the long run you want to be able to update it.
