Network help and tricks, setup your own network.

Ok, so we are all connected but it doesn't work.  Relax it's just some configuration if you have done the prior steps, lets figure out what is wrong.  Remember basics.  Make sure you checked everything on page 1.  1st thing we want to check is our network adapter and network setup in the pc.  The following may be a little different depending on the version of windows you are running, but you will figure it out with no problems.  Right click my computer.  Left click properties.  click hardware then device manager.  2/3 of the way down you will see network adapters.  Click + symbol to expand and see devices.  Do you see a network adapter?  Is there a red X or yellow exclamation point on it?  If red X right click and left click enable.  If yellow exclamation point double click it and see what it says.  Most likely driver.  Follow directions to re-install driver.  You may need to contact your computer manufacturer for this if your unsure or post in the forums here and ask.  If no network adapter shows look lower and see if you have a yellow ? by unknown devices.  Click +  symbol to expand.  Unknown device is probably your network adapter.  Remove it, find your driver disk and reboot, new hardware found use driver disk and hopefully your good.  You could have a bad card, or more likely built into motherboard.  1st check cmos or bios.  Reboot and F2, DEL, F10, etc.  it will tell you press ?? to enter setup.  Make sure LAN is not disabled.  If above still doesn't resolve you can take it to a shop or go buy a $20 or less Ethernet card and install it your self.

Your Ethernet card shows up fine in device manager but still can't ping gateway or IP of 169.xxx.xxx.xxx?  Go to control panel, network, find Local area connection and right click and properties.  Here is where we set protocols, file and print sharing, TCP/IP etc,  Is TCP/IP checked?  If not check it and back out by OK, apply and reboot and try again.  If it is checked double click TPC/IP and see if it is checked obtain IP address automatically and obtain DNS automatically.  If not change it now.  More on DHCP or Static later.  Did this fix it?  If so move on, if not???  You don't have a valid DHCP server.  Look in your router manual and see what default IP of it should be.  Something like 192.168.1.1.  All routers by default have dhcp enabled.  Double check page 1 of my instructions and make sure your connected.  If so, next thing to check, are you running Mcafee or Symantec Internet protection?  Most new computers come with this pre-installed.  Go into the firewall portion of it.  You should find a place to allow a range of network IP addresses.  Again look at your router documentation.  Example router documentation says router is 192.168.1.1 so allow range of 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254.  Is it fixed trying instructions on page 1?

OK, we still aren't connected.  Either a DHCP or a hardware problem.  1st thing, find a paperclip.  Straighten one end out and on the back of the router there should be a recessed reset button.  Use the paper clip to reset it.  Hold it in and count to 20.  Let go give it a min, then reboot PC and try page 1 for testing at the command prompt.  Still a 169.  IP?  Very doubtful.  go back thru all of the previous instructions.  Next step is from the router manual we know that are router is assigned xxx IP such as 192.168.1.1  That IP is our gateway and DNS.  Go into control panel, network, right click local area connection and choose use the following IP address.  The last octet or number must be unique.  so for the 1st pc use 192.168.1.2  or whatever your router IP is just use a different last number between 1 and 254.  Subnet will always be 255.255.255.0 and gateway and DNS is your routers IP address.  Such as 192.168.1.1  make these changes and from page 1 try the command prompt test again.  If no go, you have a hardware issue and probably something simple.  Re-read these instructions.

We can ping the router but not the Internet.  This is most likely a setting, that I am unable to cover here as there are so many variables.  PPPOE, for example.  Call our ISP and get free help.  However I have seen where with some ISP's if you go into the TCP/IP setting I mentioned above, and use the IP address of DNS servers that your ISP supplies it works.

Ok assuming all above is correct and you can surf the Internet, but want to share files and folders or printers do the following.  For folders go to my computer, find the drive, normally C and find the folder you want to share.  Right click the folder then left click sharing.  Share name anything you want.  Choose share this folder on the network, and most likely you will want to choose allow other users to change my files.  Back out, OK, apply and you should now see a hand under it.  For printers go to your printers, find your printer, right click then left click sharing.  Choose share this printer and back out apply or ok.  Above is all done on PC with printer or folders that are on it to be shared.  Now go to the other PC.  To add a network printer, go to printers.  Add a new printer.  Choose network printer, choose browse, find the computer name printer is hooked up to,  click plus symbol next to it then double click the printer under it.  It should install the driver automatically.  and your done.  To access files or folders on the main computer, go to my network places, find the computer you want to access files you should see the shared folder there double click it and there are the files on the other computer.

I'll add more later, thanks for stopping by.  If it was helpful tell your friends.  Gary
