Free spyware and Malware help.  Tools and info to clean your computer.

So you think you have spyware or malware?  Most computers do.  But I don't download music or go to questionable sites!  Doesn't matter.  Myspace for example has had problems where spyware was embedded in advertising banners on their pages.  Just viewing the site gets you infected.  Quite a few programs you download and install, free screensavers, games, etc. Have hidden in their terms of service (Who reads all of that legal mumbo jumbo) state that you are agreeing to view advertising, blah blah blah.  What Is Malware and Spyware?  Simple, viral advertising software.  Advertising on the Internet is big money.  Where do you think Google makes there money?  Ok, ok, just tell me how to clean my computer of this stuff.

#1 No single program is 100% effective at cleaning or removing everything.  My top pick (I have used for years, on 100's of computers) is Adaware.  They have a free version which works well.  Download it here. Adaware.   After you download it, double click the downloaded file to install.  After installation, run the program.  You will see a check for updates button, click the button a new screen pops up, choose Internet.  If there is a update (and their usually is) follow instructions to download and install it.  After it is updated run the scan.  Using defaults is fine.  You will see numbers in red.  These are the number of malware and spyware items it has found.  You will eventually get to a screen that shows a list of programs with a box in front of it that can be checked.  Trust the program and checkmark everything in the list.  Just follow instructions to finish.  If it tells you it want's to run on next reboot as some items couldn't be removed, let it.  Adaware has been my #1 tool for removing spyware and malware.  If you purchase the program as apposed to using the free version, It should prevent spyware and malware from infecting your system.  I have not personally used the paid version, but I do trust and endorse adaware.  The free version, cleaning customers computers have made me $1,000's over the last few years.

#2 Like I said earlier once your infected 1 single program may not completely clean your computer.  My 2nd choice is a new program from my favorite Anti-Virus software company.  Grisoft.  Now this program is a trial and will expire in a couple of weeks unless you purchase it.  But the trial is fine for cleaning up your system for now.  AVG Anti-Spyware free edition can be downloaded here.  Download.  Same as Adaware, download and install, run the updates and trust the program.  Once it expires you can either purchase or uninstall it.  

#3  Microsoft has a Free program called defender.  Not my top pick, but hey it's free.  You can download it here.  Download.  You have to be running XP and have a legal copy to download it.

Ok the above steps are completely safe for anyone to do.  We are now going to get into more advanced programs to clean your PC if above didn't help.  Before proceeding if you have done the above and rebooted and PC is still infected run a virus scan 1st.  Click here for more info.  If your still infected after running the above and using my virus info page to scan for viruses, you have 2 choices.  Take it to a computer shop and pay the money.  Use the following info at your own risk.  I do the following all the time, but, hey, I don't know your skill level.

Next program to download and run is HiJack this.  A really great program, but totally manual so you need to know what your doing.  Look for BHO which is Browser helper programs.  If your not sure don't remove it. Most likely you can figure out what you need to remove from the symptoms of your computer.  Download it here.  Download.   Be careful.
