Viruses reminds me of the old song. War, what is it good for? Well viruses have evolved and now their good for identity theft, turning your computer into a spam machine, and much much more nasty things. It used to be viruses where just for points among peers of the sick people who write them. Now it is big business. Maybe money is the root of all evil. The good thing is, modern anti-virus programs are very good at catching and preventing viruses from entering your computer. AS LONG AS YOU KEEP IT UPDATED. A anti-virus program without updates is worthless. Updates are a must. Here in my opinion is what is the real problem. All the major computer manufacturers include anti-virus software with their pc's. At the most it is a 90 day trial. Which means at the end of the trial period cough up some $$ or no updates. Did I mention anti-virus software without updates is useless? Ok, enough ranting and on to fixing your problem and getting you protected.
You have a few choices with Anti-virus software. The top 2 are Mcafee and Symantec's Nortons. If you have a newer computer one of these was preloaded as a trial program. Do I recommend them? Well No. They have both evolved into bloated, resource hogging programs. What's worse is since they are the 2 biggest companies, virus writers target them and have there viruses disable them. Inside scoop on these companies. Mcafee started business by introducing a computer virus hoax, that sold a lot of software. Because of that I have never liked or trusted them. Symantec, is more puzzling. Peter Norton was a real computer wiz. Back in the MS Dos 6 days, run defrag, etc. you saw his name as the inventor. His software is so bloated now, I guess he sold out. Corp. America. Arrgghhh. Ok, I'm ranting again..Sorry. Now to the solutions.
#1 I have used Grisoft's AVG free on my personal computers and 1,000's of clients for many years. Checks for updates daily. Scans computer daily. Very low overhead on resources, and hey, it's free. You can download it here. #2 Would be Trend Micro They do have a free online
scanner for Viruses and malware which you can find here. TrendMicro.
. For real time, true anti-virus protection you do need to
purchase the program. However it is not bloated and a very good
anti-virus program. Trend Micro AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware 2008 - Powerful, proven protection against viruses and spyware.
One last note: Do not confuse viruses with spyware / malware. Viruses are a problem and you do need anti-virus software that is up and running and updated, but by far the biggest problem is spyware and malware. Click here for more info.
