Where to host my website?

Easy CGI Web Hosting - $7.96 per month

Where to host my website?  So many choices and so many price ranges and options.  How do I choose?  Well 1st thing you should know, that while there are 10,000's of thousands of host out there, the actual number of hosts is probably in the 100's.  The majority of hosts are resellers.  They do not own the equipment and have no control over bandwidth, servers, uptime, outages, etc.  They signed up with a major good host, such as the ones shown on this page.  They pay a monthly fee and then resell hosting under their name.  Many of the larger host have designed this so they remain invisible.  What you need to do is cut out the middle man.  Better pricing, better true support, etc.

The next thing you want is complete control over your domain.  The ability to manage your own email.  Add accounts, change passwords, etc.  Email is an important part of your domain.  You also want ftp privileges, so you can upload pages, pictures, whatever on your own.  A lot of hosts, mainly ISP's who also host, you have to call and have them change a password or add an account etc. Then you need to change your site and you can't without contacting them.  So make sure you have full 24x7 access to FTP and email administration.

Microsoft FrontPage compatible web hosting. Plus get Free domains, software, advertising tools and online ad $$$.

I would also suggest you look at the features your hosts has available to you. Web mail?  Most do, but if you want or need it make sure.  Do you have plans for CGI scripts?  Php scripts?  Most hosts support this but make sure.  What if you have trouble installing a script?  What kind of support.  Now don't expect them to install it, but is support available for free for help such as path, version of perl, etc. ?  If your planning to add a forum such as PHPBB, or chat room, blog, or any other type of script do they have any built in ones you can easily install?  The better hosts have all of the major scripts ready for you to install thru your control panel.  No need to download, unzip, upload, configure sql database and configure program.  Just a couple of clicks, answer a few questions and it is ready to use.

The next thing is disk space and bandwidth.  You want to make sure you have enough disk space allowed for your site and emails.  Bandwidth can be trickier. Bandwidth depends on traffic, and content.  If you have a lot of graphics or things that can be downloaded you will use more bandwidth.  If your just starting, I'd go small, just make sure if you grow you can easily change your plan.

Look at the advertisements on this page for hosts.  I only put ads from what I consider to be tier 1 reliable hosts.  Make sure you read my below link on how to get your own website.  I want to make sure you actually own your site.

Ok you have signed up with a host.  Now get their dns info.  Something like ns1.greatbuys.net and ns2.greatbuys.net.  Go to where you registered your domain.  Login, go to name servers or DNS, you may need to unlock, change name servers to match what your hosts told you.  There should be 2 name servers.  If you had to unlock after your done make sure you lock it back.  If you have a website already up, prior to this, make sure you upload your website to the new host, and setup all email accounts.  That way it will be invisible.  It can take up to 72 hours for DNS changes to take place, but anymore it is done within a few hours.
